Good things are coming

The World of Logs fellows have been too kind in providing myself and Dave over at RaidBots with full, daily dumps of data. The site will operate as normal for now, but know that big things are coming down the pipeline, and hopefully we’ll soon have a much more expansive view of DPS changes and trends.

4.0.6 data (kind of)

So you’ll notice a new option under settings called ‘Data Set’. This allows you to only display parses that were recorded after 4.0.6. While this might seem great, the data is actually somewhat similar, with nerfed classes having a smaller sample size due to being hard-pressed to match their former numbers.

Again, I’ll hopefully have a new data implementation method drawn up in the next few weeks. This will require a sizable re-write of the site, but will hopefully be able to get better, more configurable data, as well as bringing new features to the table.

Odds and ends

Just pushed an update that fixes the apostrophe in searches - hopefully that’s fully functioning now. Do let me know if anyone finds any irregularities again.

I’ve started light development on a new version of the site, and most of my time will be put in to that from here until it’s release. I can’t accurately gauge when the new site will be released; that said, I hope to have a lot of awesome new features, and hopefully a better interface for charts, graphs and settings. The current iteration of the site will of course still be updated daily.

The problem with 4.0.6 data

I’ve had a few requests to filter only 4.0.6 data, or at least have an option for it under settings. After spending the day attempting to make this happen, I’ve come to the conclusion that with the way I’m collecting the data, and the model that World of Logs uses to store and display it’s date, it is currently impossible to get any truly accurate results.

The main issue stems from the fact that World of Logs does not have a cutoff date in it’s top 200. It’s the top 200 from forever and ever, and that includes pre-nerfs/buffs. Nerfed classes are going to struggle to top their old DPS parses, thus their numbers remain static when looking at those lists. Buffed classes quickly replace their old parses, making the exclusion of pre-patch data useless after a week or two, as the parses are all from the new patch by then. The nature of our data source is simply broken, and thus makes it so we cannot get the data we’re looking for.

I’m formulating a new plan to hopefully alleviate this issue for future patches. It is a whole new way for obtaining data from WoL, and it might just not work for what I’m doing here. Hopefully though, I’ll have an answer for that within a week or two, after I begin capturing the data in the new format. Stay tuned.

I’ve added a Class / Spec selector for to http://search.stateofdps.com. Now you can search for the top classes on your server, like this!

Pretty awesome eh? I also added an Orc wearing a pink dress to the site. This was one of the most asked for features, and I’m only too happy to oblige. 

RaidBots!

http://raidbots.com is live! Seriallos (of StratFu - Kamigami Tools fame) has put together some awesome tools and a great charting system. Go check it out, I like it better than my site!

Updated Search

Sooo, kind of broke the site for a few minutes, but alls well that ends well. The search has been updated to separate the Name, Guild and Server. Hopefully this will give users the granularity in the search that they’d like. I’ve also added links to armory and the individual’s parse on WoL, as well as updating the permalink functionality.

This will be the end of production for a bit on the site, I’ll be updating the charts timeline at some point this week to autoupdate, and perhaps changing the header a bit, but other than that, no new features are planned for a few weeks. In my head, the next feature will be a website / WordPress widget for the Player Search results; Something you could embed on your guild site that lists your guild’s ranked players.

Top 200 Player Search

New feature Thursday! Hopefully this one doesn’t kill my server. Check out Player Search, which lets you sort through the top 200 parses for each boss, with the ability to search by Name or Guild Name. I’ve also updated the look a bit, adding icons. Let me know if there’s any bugs or anything!

Heroic Modes: GO

I’m tracking Heroic Modes now, the data is a bit scanty for now, so the numbers will definitely be in flux. Keep an eye on the samples; If it’s low, you know the numbers could be off quite a bit. The charts will look better once there’s more days.

I also spruced up the charts a bit, adding the associated color to each class. That’s probably it for today, tomorrow I’d like to add bar charts back to the mix, and also a new player search feature at some point.

Update: Added bar graphs today, the CSS for the images is a bit off, I’ll line that up tomorrow.

New Server, New Charts

We’re living on a new server now, hosted on Slicehost and being served up via Nginx. Hopefully this will enable the site to be a bit quicker, and gives me more flexibility in controlling the server. Hopefully I won’t blow it up.

The new charts are implemented, and the old bar graphs are coming soon. There’s also some new features that have been requested that I’ll try to work on, such as a top player search and better options for the graphs. I’m pretty happy with the new server though, so I’ll be taking a break from the site this weekend!
